  • Stokes Field Guide to Birds : Eastern Region -- Wonderful photography and a very comprehensive guide.
  • National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Birds : Eastern Region -- Much improved classic birding guide.
  • A Birder's Guide to Eastern Massachusetts -- Get to the local's favorite spots!
  • All the Birds of North America : American Bird Conservancy's Field Guide This is my very favorite new field guide because it covers ALL of the US in one book, shows plumage variances by region and season, and includes rarities and escapees. Very nice.
  • A Field Guide to Advanced Birding : Birding Challenges and How to Approach Them
  • Focus Guide to the Birds of North America
  • The Birder's Handbook : A Field Guide to the Natural History of North American Birds;Including All Species That Regularly Breed North of Mexico -- Not truly a field guide because of its large size, but wow, what a lot of great info!

    Audio Guides

  • Birding by Ear : Eastern/Central (Peterson Field Guides) -- An essential tool for learning this important technique (you will hear a lot more birds than you will ever see!).
  • Bird Song Ear Training Guide This is my latest cd on birdsong and I love it! It uses lots of mnemonics to drive home the patterns of the song. It is a great teaching tool.

  • Hope Is the Thing With Feathers: A Personal Chronicle of Vanished Birds An amazing tale of a bird observer who seeks to find the last individuals of extinct bird species. Really a great read.
  • The Curious Naturalist: Nature's Everyday Mysteries Learn amazing facts about the world around us. I love reading this book with my kids and going out to find the things we just learned.
  • Rare and Elusive Birds of North America A quest to photograph and learn about the hardest-to-find birds of North america.
